SAILING INFORMATION

Phuket’s beautiful climate makes it a perfect sailing destination all round the year. Its tidal range is approximately 2 to 3 meters. From Nov to April the dry monsoon results in stable north-easterly winds which ranges from 5 – 23 mph (5 – 20 knots).

The climate is mainly dry and sunny and the seas are generally calm except for the wet monsoon season, which occurs from May - Oct. The wet monsoon season brings with it the occasional tropical shower along with stronger, southwesterly winds. Sailing during this season promises you and exhilarating sailing adventure.

Phuket’s west coast does not allow anchorage during the wet season (May to October). Due to this there can be a significant swell in bare areas.

It should be noted that a Phuket bareboat yacht charter, although tempting to try, is only suitable for sailors with several years' experience.


Sailing License:
A boating license is required for a bareboat charter in Thailand.


Cruising Area Limits:
During the NE season the cruising area includes all Thai Waters. These include the areas from the Surin and Similan islands in the North down to Koh Tarutao also the Butang islands in the South. During the SW monsoon, cruising area limitations include The Surin, Similan Islands, and anchorages on the West Coast of Phuket. These areas cannot be used due to safety concerns.


National Park Fee:
300 Baht per person per night while cruising in the National Park Areas.
500 Baht per person per night + 500 Baht per yacht per night when visiting the Similan or Surin Islands National Park, which are accessible only from November to April.

Boat Lagoon Marina was Phuket’s first. It has berths for 168 boats with an extensive range of top facilities and services. Keeled or deep-draft vessels of up to 35 meters in length and a draft of 2.5 meters can enter on either side of high tide. Be advised that the approach channel is quite tight and has a varying depth and width. Come explore and see what Phuket’s first marina complex has to offer.

Ao Chalong Bay is located at the southeastern end of Phuket Island and has year-round anchorage. It is a large, shallow bay facing south, which is protected by the island known as Lone Island at the entrance of the bay. This is a popular spot for visiting yachts to rest and drop anchor. There are also a number of restaurants and marine service outlets available on-shore.
